Texans passed a constitutional amendment last night which relegated homosexuals further to the margins of our society. The wording of the amendment which was passed by 75% of the electorate reads as follows:
"The constitutional amendment providing that marriage in this state consists only of the union of one man and one woman and prohibiting this state or a political subdivision of this state from creating or recognizing any legal status identical or similar to marriage."
Gay marriage was already illegal in Texas, so really this amendment is just a poke in the eye, making even the possibility of any social evolution in Texas impossible. There is always the possibility that this could be challenged in the courts, but getting it through the appeals process in Texas seems equally unlikely. In a world that is slowly heating up due to our over-consumptive patters, where a war of empire is going on in Iraq and our ability to effectively engage the world as Americans is slowly slipping away, it astonishes me that we are that concerned about the legal status of folks who like to do different things with their genitals than heterosexuals.
